Re: "Too Much Stuff"
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 4:47 PMThis tribe seems to cover a lot of topics related to material possessions but i want to focus in my tribe specifically on how we feel about our stuff, how our stuff affects us, not so much on consumer decisions nor how we spend money. This is really about the stuff itself, the stuff that sits around our homes, might keep us from moving to a different home when we need to, or maybe even if you don't have much and the mobility that gives you. Also what kind of stuff do we really need? Three sets of dishes? One set of dishes? Just a bowl and spoon? How do we keep from accumulating stuff like paperwork from long ago? How do we make decisions about what to get rid of? So i think the topic is somewhat different from the topic of this tribe.
The reason this came about is that my husband and i split up, i still live in the house we shared, and i have lots of stuff. I am trying to decide how much of it to keep, whether i want to move out to a smaller dwelling, or add housemates, or even just hit the road and travel awhile without the burden of stuff. Yet i have a lot of cool stuff we collected over the years, from garage sales and whatnot. Much of it is quite practical, like decent kitchen equipment. Also have lots of cool and interesting books, mainly just for fun. Also lots of garden tools and stuff in the garage for doing household repairs, etc. Not sure if it will get used although it often comes in handy. Seems a shame to get rid of it if i stay here but if i want to move i would have to do a lot of work just to get rid of the stuff! So i created the tribe to try to get a better understanding of how other people deal with possessions. -

Re: "Too Much Stuff"
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 6:57 AMIn our community we have a not for profit thrift store that donates the money to worthwhile community organizations. When a purchase is made you get to vote for which organization you want a donation made too. It makes it easier to get rid of "stuff" when you know it will be used and loved and that the money made from the sale benefits the community directly.
