It's the simple things... right?
1. vegan pumpkin bread for breakfast
2. watching my kitties play with a fake halloween spider (they go crazy for it)
3. finishing a short video project I've been working on for a few weeks
4. wearing my DIY fashion armwarmers (that I made out of socks)
5. easily finding parking at work
It was a good day! Most days are though...

Jenn,
I feel similarly -- I rarely have a bad day. Today's 5 things are, in chronological order:
1. Waking up with my floppy-eared best friend curled up next to me
2. My morning hour walk
3. Simple Minds' "Ghost Dancing" in my head as I walked to work
4. gcc --version (compilers make me happy)
5. Bringing my doggie a treat when I get home

Re: 5 things that made you happy today
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 3:09 AMAll of this sounds great, let me add a somewhat different reply though...
What made me happy today, and has been making me happier in general, is the growing number of people who realize that biofuels are important to the future of our civilization, while also realizing that Ethanol is a very foolish biofuel in most cases and that food and fuel should not be in competition but instead should work in cooperation and mutually supportive ways such as the systems detailed in my ongoing work in progress, the Greener Ohio Sustainable Civilization Plan.
Methanol, not Ethanol. A biofuel that will be around as long as there are people and doesn't take up crop land but instead helps reclaim land and renew it.
THAT is what makes me happy.
and how cute my cats are, as well as reading this thread has. -

Thorgrim,
Actually, the jury is still out on biofuels -- they generally pollute less in terms of particulate matter than diesel and less air toxins than gasoline, but similar amounts in terms of CO2, and more in terms of NOx (which causes smog). Also, the US government does not hold diesel / biodiesel / etc. vehicles to anywhere near the standards that they hold gasoline vehicles to from a mileage and emissions perspective. Biofuels are cleaner in some respects to gasoline (for instance, they generally biodegrade much faster, so oil spills like the one we recently had in the San Francisco bay (grrrr) wouldn't have as much negative impact when they happen), but until there are common standards applied to the manufacturing and distribution of biofuels, as well as mileage / emissions standards for the engines / vehicles that burn them, biofuels aren't necessarily better than diesel / gasoline in many circumstances.
Personally, i'm a big supporter of public transportation. After driving rarely for 9 months, I got rid of my car over a month ago, yet i'm still able to get to / from work everyday. When I do get another (maybe sometime in 2008, i'm not sure), i'm leaning towards the hybrid-electric models, because at this point they offer the best combination of a standards-based manufacturing, distribution and burning system, while burning much less gasoline under many conditions. Biofuels may turn out to be really cool, but until they (and the vehicles that burn them) are subject to the same manufacturing / distribution / emissions regulations and standards as gasoline and ethanol are, i'm choosing hybrid-electrics as the cooler option.
Regards,
John

Re: 5 things that made you happy today
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 10:14 AMThe Car Talk guys had an interesting Puzzler about a similar topic.
My friend Joe lives a few blocks from me. He's a regular working stiff, just like me, though we work at different places, Now, Joe, he likes to do the right thing -- as he sees it -- so he recently bought himself a brand-new Prius.
Joe says, "Wow, it gets great gas mileage, almost 50 mpg around town and about 40 on the highway, even with 5 people in it -- you know 4 passengers and the driver. That's pretty good."
Anyway, Joe's grandmother for years drove a beat up old Plymouth Voyager. He used to tease her about it getting maybe just a little more than 15 mpg around town. Of course, it did a lot better on the highway with that 5-speed manual transmission and 4-cylinder engine.
Grandma claims she would get something like 28 mpg maybe a little more on the highway. Pretty good. But Joe hated that thing; it was underpowered and it was ugly.
So when Grandma died, you guessed it, she willed the Voyager to him. It sat in Joe's driveway for a couple of weeks while he advertised it for sale in the paper. But as you would expect, no takers.
I went on a vacation at about this time. Returning from Sand-in-Your-Shorts-Beach in Florida, I drove by his house on the way home and there was the Voyager in his driveway, but it looked like it had been driven.
Joe was home, so I stopped in. "What's up?" I asked. "Decide to keep that nifty Voyager?"
Joe says, "Well, yeah. You know I realized that I could get as good mileage as the Prius if I didn't drive it all the time."
So, is Joe flipped out or is there something going on here?
-----------------------
ANSWER:
TOM: I know the answer. He got as good gas mileage in the beater Voyager if he drove it downhill all the time.
RAY: No, you knucklehead. He drove it when it was full of people. OK, now think about it. Let's say the Prius gets 40 miles per gallon per 5 people, right?
TOM: Yeah.
RAY: For 5, that's 200 people miles per gallon. The Voyager holds 7 people, so at 28 miles per gallon, or maybe a little bit better, that's 7 times 28, that's 196 people miles per gallon.
TOM: Yeah.
RAY: Twenty-eight, well it's almost as good as the Prius.
TOM: It is. So if you've got a crowd you can have a heap. -

Re: 5 things that made you happy today
Thu, November 15, 2007 - 4:03 AMJohn, I believe if you take a look at more up to date info you will find that things are a bit different for various biofuels than you believe.
You also do not notice the huge amount of pollution generated to make the batteries for the hybrids and when they break or wear out, let alone if there is a vehicle fire.
Hybrids are a nice intermediate idea, not a final solution, and they work well with biofuels so they are by no means in competition a hybrid running biodiesel may well end up being one of the most workable overall near term solutions. -
